GOODAY FROM BIRDSVILLE FAR WEST QLD

Wednesday, 14 August 2013

I made it 900k's across from Coober Pedy via Marree then up the 510k's of the Birdsville track to here.

Yes thats right I am in Qld for bit then back into South AUS to Innamincka area.

Even the silver flash has been behaving quite well, nearly 4000 k's since I left Adelaide which was the last time the flash misbehaved badly.  The metal dude is playin the game nicely at the moment.

Some highlights of the Birdsville track:
The only civilisation was the Mungerannie pub and wetland full of birds etc fed by an open water bore.  An oasis in a dry outback zone or was it all just a sun mirage???
I went kayaking on a very large permanent waterhole on daimantina river about 60 k's south of Birdsville.  The river also goes through Birdsville. Quite remote beautiful place with lots of birds
The changing landscapes from dry gibber rock plains to low grass and shrub plains of the Goyder lagoon to sand dunes with different vegetation to sandy plains with dunes running parallel to the track and also going between the Tirari and Strezlecki desert dunes.
Oh yeah when i was at the Mungerannie pub a group of dudes who were comin down the track told me they had passed a german lady travellin on a bicycle..  So next day I saw her up further and offered her a cuppa, so we had a chat for about an hour which was good.  I am used to talking to Germans from university, so all good.

Birdsville is the same as last year when I was here except it is a fair bit warmer at the moment.  Its gunna get busy here 7/8th Sept for the big race w/end, I will be long gone.  Think there may be a race meeting at Innamincka soon, have to check the date.  Paid $6 for a loaf of bread from the bakery!  Also cost $9 for a schooner of beer at the famous pub.  It costs approx 3.50 down Brissie way!  At least the fuel is near the same as  last year. Only $1.79 litre.  I paid far higher in Sth Aus.  Are you surprised if I tell you Birdsville is 1600 k's from Brissie???

There is a croc catcher in town lookin to catch Kyle the 5ft freshwater croc in the permanent waterhole at the Diamantina river here. Kyle has been here since May.  It is a mystery how he got here as he is at least 1000k's south of his normal home area, possibly a fisherman bought him down from north or he got washed down in a previous flood.  Anyway Kyle is going to go live at the fun park area at Coomera south of Brissie for a bit.

Had a chat to the information dudes here plus looked at their maps.  Birdsville is about 130k's east from the Northern Territory border which goes through part of the simpson desert. The 3 states of Sth Aus, Qld and NT meet together at a place called Poepells corner.  So I will be headin out that way for a look in the next week.  Its a 340k round trip from Birdsvile to there and return.

So now I have done 2 of the three main outbck tracks in Sth Aus being the Oodnadatta and Birdsville tracks. The 3rd track called the Strezslecki starts at Innamincka and goes back down to Lyndhurst near Marree, and is about 450k's long and goes past the Moomba oil and gas fields in the cooper basin.

To get to Innamincka from here is approx 450 k's south east back into Sth Aus through som dry rough track country which I went on part of it last year (and bashed my engine oil sump on a large rock) or a more circular series of tracks of approx 580k's length which is the way I may go so as to see different country than last year.

The Cooper creek comes down from Qld through Innamincka and there are some lovely campspots along its permanent waterholes which i went to last year.  Also the cooper creek goes through a permanent lake system north of Innamincka called Coongie lakes Nat Park (on its way to Lake Eyre when in flood) so this should be a good place for kayaking when i get there too.  The Innamincka area is famous for where the illfated Burke and  Wills expedition leaders perished. in the mid 1800's.  Lots of historical info and sites to check out there

Well I will keep doing the hard yards here so as to keep you all mentally challenged by my posts.

Here are some pics of the Birdsville track, more to come.  Also lots of pics of the Oodnadatta track and Witjira Nat Park too.  Plus videos.   Time Time I need more time!!

Well time to go and have a cuppa with a family i met on the Birdsville track who are in the caravan park here.

Most of the outback tracks in Aus have these satellite controlled road signs. Heavy penalties apply if you go on them when they are closed

A regular outback dude

North of the dingo fence the only reliable food for the dingo other than rabbits is killing cows on the pastoral stations.  These dingoes were brazingly starting to eat a recent dead cow only 15 metres from the track edge.  Even some crows joined in.

Can you pronounce this name?  There are lots of long names like this in the outback.  Makes you wonder where they get them from.  Possibly part european part aboriginal names???

This is the mighty Cooper creek crossing on the track.  I camped 2 nites in there.  Apparently when it floods down from Qld can be up to 5 k's wide.  there is a small car ferry a few k's away for when it floods.

Sunset from the cooper creek camp. Rare cloud on horizon as mostly blue sky days here.

The Mungerannie pub approx half way along the track, a welcome sight.  No other places along track.

Some of the old mail trucks used by legendary outback mailman Tom Kruse at the pub. There is another one at Marree.

The pub has a small pool fed by warm bore water at the camp ground.  see black pipe bottom right.

FINAL NITE IN COOBER PEDY

Monday, 5 August 2013

Hey I'm leavin Coober Pedy in the morning. Heading east 400 ks across back to Marree where i started up the Oodnadatta track a while back.  This time I will be headin north east up the Birdsville track 520 k's to Birdsville in far western Qld where I had to leave my previous vehicle last winter. Going to visit it.

There are no towns between Marree and Birdsville, only some outback pub on its own to quench my thirst.

Well before I leave here i was thinkin you dudes may want to see some pics right now of Coober Pedy.  I can hear you salvitating at the moment in anticipation.  Well heres a sample of pictures.  Oh I went underground this arvo into some peoples underground home plus looked in another underground church.  I really enjoyed the house or dugout as they are called, nice and cool below.

A museum, part of a hotel complex underground

Opal information

Outside a mine, the truck with the big bucket works where the mined sandstone underground is sucked up the pipes into the big drum. When it is full the bottom opens and dumps the sandstone on the ground.. Masses of sandstones piles as far as you can see

I went down into a working mine

About 30 to 40 feet underground lookin up a ventilation shaft.  In the old days before mechanical things were available this was the only way up and down for a miner by hand pulley and also getting the mined sandstone up to the surface

A display section in the mine showing artefacts etc

Next few pics are in a persons underground dugout house, note the rough sandstone walls which are very strong and don't need any support

Catholic church entrance

underground in da church

This is your typical house dugout entrance with a carport on side of hill, then you walk inside underground, cool living from the heat and cold. Note the ventilation pipes above, they all have the usual electricity, tv and internet

Entrance to the Serbian church, cool cross at top

Mechanical digger in Toms working mine I went into

MORE GAMMON RANGES NP PICS, NTH FLINDERS RANGES

Natural springs comin up in a dry environment, lots of lush vegetation
This parrot looked around when I whistled to him
Gammon Ranges NP like other parks was a former Pastoral station. This is an outstation in the park that you can go and stay in for a fee.
Just north of the Nat Park is a large private place called Arkaroola sanctuary I went in to get fuel and do a bushwalk

Along bushwalk, Arkaroola

The eastern side of the Flinders ranges is a very large dry salt Lake Frome shimmering on the horizon

Arkaroola sanctuary also has an observartory for guests to view the heavens

Cold early morning in the northern Flinders

This wattle tree only grows in the Gammon NP

Inquisitive Emus

Another flowering wattle

Driving west along a very rough track that borders the Nat Park and Arkaroola. Ametal plate protecting the underside of the engine fell off along here after hittin several rocks!!

SOME PICS FOR YOU

Another great sunset over the Flinders Ranges
Hey still at Coober Pedy for a few more days. Hey don't forget to checkout the 'Interactive Map' page on the blog as it shows where i have been going around AUS.  Its under the bus picture near the top....

Here are some pics of the Gammon Ranges Nat Park in the northern Flinders Ranges

I climbed up on mountain from the gorge below right. To get a better view. There are no tracks up, I just climbed zigzag

Grass Trees on mountain above the gorge

U know how scientists say Australia's inland was covered by seas x millions of years ago, well I found these sort of shape things up on mountain like heated within the rock

Sunset from Chambers Gorge lookin south

Hmmm, this kanga may have died from predator attack??

Mallee ringneck parrot

When u go bushwalking u come across all sorts of stuff including feral goats, obviously being culled.

Wildflowers

Camping by on one of the creek campgrounds in the Nat Park

Another example of the scientist inland sea thing.  Click on this pic to zoom in. Found this also up on mountain. Sea worms and other crazy little dudes. The sea must have been high  along time ago to get to the top of the mountain

AT COOBER PEDY NOW FOR A BIT

Thursday, 1 August 2013

Wow this is a bit of a culture shock comin to a town with about  3000 ppls around.  The last 2 towns had 150 & 8 in them.  Been so used to remote places with more animals and birds than people...

Coober Pedy is one different place than the usual.  Its got all the mod cons but all throughout the town  and outskirts there are piles of dirt everywhere from the opal mining which started in 1915.  Apparently the mining extends 50 k's or so north and south as well.

There are lots of old mining equipment lying around the town including old trucks etc rusting away.  There are approx 45 different nationalities of peoples living here too.  I went up on a hill to look at the sunset tonite and this guy comes out of a house and says come and see my opal mine under my house and my opal display.

Turned out to be from hong kong and been here for 45 years.   I went to the Italian club for a roast dinner tonite chicken, pork and beef & veg for $10.  Might go back for fish n chips tomorrow nite.

Today I went to four underground place which were a bookshop, catholic church, a museum with a cafe and opal shop and a town history display,  These places are all underground in old mines or dug out of the side of hills. Half the population live underground to escape the heat where they dig into the side of hills. I am going to see a home underground soon and also see a working mine too.. There are also motels underground.

Oh yeah the last week I went up to Witjira nat park and Mt Dare hotel near NT/SA border and simpson desert. I even went into Northern Territory for a bit then headed back south to Oodnadatta again.  1st time in NT for me.  Within The Nat Park I went to see the Dalhouse Springs where I went for a swim in a designated spring which was approx 37 degree just like a hot bath very nice.  Had 2 swims. Wrinkled fingers afterwards.

There are about 140 springs in the Nat Park which all come up naturally from the great Artesian basin which
is a a large body of water underground covering most of the outback.  Water bores are drilled down to get water for remote towns and pastoral properties...  Have I bored you yet????????

Oh yeah I got an email to say I was unsuccessful with the job with the Defence Dept that I went for an interview in Adelaide for.   Life goes on!

Went to mechanic in Coober Pedy today who said couldn't find anything wrong with the van other than a bolt fallen off a front steering arm.  Good news for a change.

Also check out the interactive map  page at top of my blog to see the a map where i have been around AUS.
